The poem is symbolic in nature. Some of the symbols are: 1) THE BLUE SHIRT. The shirt which is tattered, symbolises poverty. The Swing, represents the world. The uncertainty of life.
The three rhetorical questions in the last stanza really reveals the hopelessness and general insecurity that the blacks were made to surfer during the Apartheid regime.
After the presumed young boy had fun on the swing, he is said to start feeling dizzy then he comes to reality which results to him asking rhetorical questions in stanza 3
